Just a little thing....

A message this morning from Martingale, the book publisher, brought this notice of free patterns offered.    I thought the table runner was too cute, so I had a peek.  I have won and bought books from this site before, but did not remember free patterns.   Just thought I would pass the info on about this little thing.

It almost felt like a fall morning today as we enjoy an early cup of coffee on the porch.    Good to enjoy it as I know it won't stay around too long.    My brother and Remy were up for the weekend, and the news is their  return flight was canceled due to the tropical storm and they will be stuck in town until Thursday!  Sounds good to me, as Remy owes Sir Old Man some time cutting the grass.

On the design wall........
A small water color has been on the wall  for a couple of weeks.  I had added a narrow border in soft gray and then was not sure of how I wanted to finish it.

I began playing and fusing squares to the interfacing to add.   I love doing a "reverse value" layout in the borders.  By that I mean the center has a dark edge or bottom in this case, so the outer border needs to be light and work up to medium.
I have the sides sewn here....they go from light to medium to dark.   Across the top is dark, and they are fused but not sewn.  You loose a good amount of fabric in the seam allowances.

Once I got everything sewn, and attached I had this.

   Or would this be better??
Up side down gives a different view on the world.  It is almost like a path leading you thru an arbor.    Just another way to ask "what if...."

Have you heard about the solar eclipse?  Well, here in Greenville, SC we are in the right place for a view of the whole shebang!  And the news is already starting to go crazy with dire predictions of crowds and traffic.  Guess we will heard 3 weeks of this .....all for a four hour event.   It's not like people will be moving in for a long stay.  But I do need to pick up the free eclipse glasses.....so stylish I hear.
Such is the latest here......happy stitching.

  1. I like it better upside down (light working down to dark). Just my opinion.

  2. I think I like the upside down better too, though both are lovely. Somehow they look cool on this hot summer afternoon, and that is a good thing! I hope you have clear weather for the eclipse. My friends out west are preparing for similar crowds. We here in the northeast may see a partial eclipse, providing the weather is clear, a big "if" this year.

  3. I like it better rotated 180 degrees. Back in the 1990s almost every piece I made ended up being rotated 180. Its nice when something can be used either way and sometimes I put on 2 rod pockets so it can be.

  5. Upside down is my favourite setting, reminds me of a waterfall.

  6. That is a cute runner pattern--churn dash is one of my favorite blocks! Thanks!
Your watercolor piece is very pretty. I am constantly impressed with the ways you have to change up watercolor quilts and come up with so many variations on the theme. Personally, I like the dark part of the border on the bottom. It feels top heavy to me to have it the other way. But it will look great whichever way you use it. : )

  8. I actually like the upside down better. Great perspective of value concept to the viewer's eye. Enjoy the eclipse - hide from the crowds.

  9. Maybe you should start inviting your brother and Remy up for each of the storms and gamble on them being forced to stay a little longer :) It's a heck of an evacuation plan. The storm is passed but yesterday was wild.
I can't decide which I like better, I think upside down but then I look at the right side up and like that one.

  10. the link didn't work for me... wah. I like your watercolor! I love making watercolor type quilts. When I don't know what to make, I go back to my box of little squares.

  11. I like the watercolor both ways.... but did you try it sideways? I think it would work in any direction, but I like the dark at the top best.

  12. Interesting to see just how much area is lost in the seam allowances. And I'm always amazed at how much better things look after being sewn and ironed. The grey inner border allows such a nice transition in this piece! Very pretty.

Folks are starting to talk about the eclipse here, too. Charleston is expecting tons of tourists, even more than usual. I'm sure it will be a zoo, so I'm glad we can just sit in the marina and watch the show. Even if it's cloudy, the sky will turn to night for a while, but I sure hope we can see the actual corona!

  13. Jumping on the bandwagon to voice my vote for the upside down look. I liked the original look, but when you rotated it, I was hooked. Enjoy the time with your brother and the solar eclipse.

  14. I like it sideways. I would put corner holders on all four sides so you don't have to choose!

  15. That is a cute table runner. I just did a churn dash mini yesterday, and I like that block. We're excited about the eclipse here in Oregon too. Mike and I aren't taking any chances of a "marine layer" rolling in and blocking it, so we're heading to central Oregon where we can be assured of hot weather and clear skies.

  16. We're hearing a lot about the eclipse here on the west coast, too. I'm not sure we'll be doing anything special other than possibly donning our stylish glasses. Your watercolor quilt top looks beautiful. I can't choose which direction I like it. Sorry, I'm not much help with that. Have a great day! --Andrea

  17. Well I'm bucking the trend. I like the dark border on top better. It's amazing how much adding the reverse value border livened this piece up. We won't see much of the eclipse here in upstate NY, but even if it were closer, we'd probably be clouded over and miss it anyway.

  18. thanks for the Martingale free pattern referral!! I love Churn Dashes too so will plan on making this one soon!

Personally I really like the upside down look with the dark at the bottom. Very interesting how things look a bit different when you add a slight change - keeps you on your toes looking for new and interesting ways of doing things in life! Great suggestion to add hanging corners to all four corners - then you can go any which way you like at the moment!!! Options are always good.
