I was just beginning a post on Monday, when we lost power. Ugh! A tree took out a power line. We were prepared for it, but being prepared physically is not the same as mentally being able to get through it.
First, my brother arrived Saturday afternoon from Naples. That is right, Naples. Destroyed and devastated. He will be here a couple of weeks....of course, I might have to hog tie him to keep him from going back. His apartment survived he heard, while others in his area were flattened or blown out. The worse news he has gotten was from the Sheriff's Office report that the electric grid has to be rebuilt (no power), there is no safe water and all must be boiled even to bathe, and no gas for residents. The report suggests residents stay put, stay out of the area for a few weeks until some semblance of order is restored.
Thank you all for prayers for him.
No power for 36 hours is a minor inconvenience I know when I put it in perspective to what others are facing. It made me think about the life style we have with all the communications, and equipment to make out life easier. No sewing....I don't have a crank machine. I needed to press a few blocks.....no power for an iron. The wind was blowing/howling all day Monday, and through the night....that meant little sleep, and I was cranky Tuesday.
Luckily I held onto an old Pyrex coffee pot that makes wonderful coffee on the gas grill! So I could put on a brave face. The gas generator (for the freezer and refrigerator) was so loud and noisy, I was glad to escape to Physical Therapy for a session......lots of stretching as the low barometric pressure produces more intense muscle and nerve pain.
A salad for dinner along with a grilled sandwich and it was almost dark and time for bed.......8 pm! Lol....candles and a lantern do not produce enough light to read by no matter what history says. We think we are tough now a days, but I have news for us......we are really spoiled.
And then the morning comes.....relief the power has been restored by those wonderful power company workers. A hot shower and a brighter day......communication and news. I do have a lot to be thankful for.
Happy stitching.
So glad to see your post this morning & that your power is back on. First responders have a very special place in my heart. They leave their own families in times like these to save & help us every time there is a disaster. Every time I heard/saw things about Naples on the news I thought & prayed for your brother. I'm so glad he is safe and that his apartment did not get flooded. Now his office...that's probably a different story. Ugh! I agree that we are spoiled & also not very appreciative of what we have. We always want more & think we have to be first in everything. God, give me an attitude of gratitude.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to see your post and know you are all right and that your brother is safely with you.
ReplyDeleteGiving thanks for safe family members! Plus you get to enjoy his company for awhile.
ReplyDeleteIt is good it returned to normal. Years ago, we had an October surprise snowstorm that flattened the trees and power north of Buffalo. We were without power for 7 days. It was terrible. I bought LED lanterns with batteries and had a handcrank radio. I keep them in a box with candles. It got dark by 5:30 and it was cold and depressing. I have a handcrank and a treadle, but was too traumatized to use them. It took 5 years before I could ever light a candle again. The tree debris was piled at least 10' high at the curbs for weeks. I can't imagine losing housing and daily possessions.
ReplyDeleteGlad you have power back. I only have a few battery operated lights for sewing with. Hope your brother stays put for a while. Less people means less distractions for all the workers that are trying to get things back up and running.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are okay and your brother too. Nice to hear the power is back - you are right, we really are spoiled by all of our conveniences. Take care! ~Jeanne
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, the irony of losing power when the power grid has to be rebuilt in his area. Sometimes there's just no escape. I'm glad he's safe. Sorry for the inconvenience. I hate being without power.
ReplyDeleteYes ma'am we are certainly spoiled. I know how to make "cowboy coffee" on the grill if necessary. But I prefer the ease of my coffeemaker. I can weave when I can't sew. But now I am thinking I might "need" a crank sewing machine. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI have several battery operated LED lights and one lantern. I also have two oil lamps. We were lucky here though and I didn't need any of that.
Hug your brother extra tight - we are praying for him.
I somehow missed a bunch of blog posts on Saturday so I'm just learning about your new physical issues and your brother's Irma saga. We have many family and friends in FL and fortunately all came through with only minor problems. But so much destruction and then the complaints start about not getting instant restoration. Anyway, keep plugging away. You can get through this latest set back and good luck to your brother.

That sounds like difficult times for your brother 😕but thankful he is ok and that he has a good place to go, and that it hasn't gotten too bad for you. (Nothing like a loss of power to make us appreciate the "small" things!!) I haven't been on in forever so I'll do some "back reading" to check how things have been going.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear that your brother is facing returning to so much damage. It's stressful, for sure, and having your power out adds to the stress! That coffee pot is a blast from the past, and aren't you glad you have it? :)
ReplyDeleteI feel for all those who are without right now. The restoration process will take time - hopefully people can find patience and kindness for others during what will probably feel like a painfully long wait. Glad to hear you are doing well.
ReplyDeleteHappy you escaped damage but sorry to hear that your brother was not so lucky, at least he made it safely to your place.
ReplyDeleteWe do take a heck of a lot of things for granted, you're spot on with the candle providing no light for reading, we've had to try that a few times when power went down, and it's always when you were just about to use something!
aieeee I hate losing power. I feel so lonely and here in MD, hot! Coffee is a must, so you found a way. Oh, poor FL. I'm originally from Tampa... LeeAnna
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear your power is back on and that your brother is safely with you! I'm praying that H. Maria follows H. Jose... it's all just too awful!
