Took a long break

I missed a whole month, an entire 31 days.  January was a blur for me of doctors--another one retired and a new one began, medications, appointments, and changes.  The drug changes did not have the desired improving effect....lol, no surprise there really.  So I am on a new regime and we will re do the testing in another 6 weeks.

Then came the day of the vaccine.....I really wish I had not done this.  For me, it was a bad idea.  I handle other stuff but not this one.  Within 12 hours I was flat out on my back, with chills, aches, headaches, dizziness, upset stomach, plus wheezing.  I know, I know.  I read that most people recover from side effects in 48 hours.  Well, 4 days later and I can barely stand up and I am on a tele visit with the doctor.  It is now 10 days later and I am still enduring the stomach distress, but all else is better.  Except the fatigue.  I am up 2 hours at a time and then need a rest.     I will survive but I won't be getting a second vaccine shot.  I will take whatever 50% or so effectiveness and run!    Please, do your own research and make your own decision about the vaccine.  I am just writing this for my record more than anything.  I do know many who had no problem at all....including Sir Old Man.

On to much better things.  I did manage to get some sewing done and got the leader and ender project joined into a top.  This is the Easy Breezy project from Bonnie Hunter.  It's a year's worth of leader and ender units.   I have the strips cut for the first narrow border.  Hoping to get them sewn on soon.

I was at a very low point in the middle of the month, when an email came from a reader, who asked for some advice on free motion quilting and watercolor quilts.  Since I am a sucker with lots of opinions, I had to jump in and respond.

What has followed has been a wonderful  opportunity to share, teach, and inspire.  For me, that is the fun of having a blog.  Irina is from an area with no quilt shops or nearby quilters to turn to.  She said she tried FB but got only "likes" and little input.  So, we began talking and working with her thru a project she wanted to make.

Irina wanted shadow boxes around the fairy blocks, with sashing and border.  I suggested the multiple rows of straight line quilting for the shadow box areas, and some wavy lines in the border.  It turned out great!

  And that was my month!

Here's for improving days and warmer temperatures for us all.  I hope to seek down the hall and sew for a while.

Happy stitching.

  2. I am at high allergy list reaction to both vaccines so waiting on the J&J single dose. We have an extreme shortage of the vaccine here in the rural areas any way. Hope you feel better soon.

  3. It's good to see you back and to hear you're doing better. The leader-ender quilt is looking great! How rewarding to be able to help Irina with her quilt. My mom would have loved that one. She always loved fairies, even when she was very little.

  4. I'm sorry to hear you had a reaction to the vaccine and hope all of the problems go away. I haven't signed up yet and I need more research about people with allergies that have had a problem.
It sounds like your tutoring was good for both of you.

  5. Oh Debbie, my condolences. I hope that enough of the people you are around get the vaccine so you aren't exposed much. And I hope that the partial immunity you get from the one dose helps.

It is wonderful to share, teach and inspire someone. I am glad Irina found you- and that you were able to help. I am sure that helped you also. :)
The Easy Breezy top looks good.

  6. I am so sorry you had a bad reaction to the shot. That is really disheartening not to mention scary, but at least Sir Old Man will be able to do both shots and add that protection for you. I'm on several lists, but no call back yet.

  7. Missed you but glad you are making a recovery at whatever speed. Great that you could share your talents with a newer quilter. Sorry we still have some cold winter to get through but it will pass.

  8. So very sorry to hear that you had a bad reaction to the vaccine. DH & I are both on a couple of wait lists & hope we can get our shots sooner than later with no bad reactions.
Irina's quilt turned out gorgeous. She found the right person in you to help her through her quilting project.

  9. I'm so sorry you experienced such a bad reaction to the immunization. We've been hearing more and more about adverse reactions to the shots currently available. We're both planning to wait for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to become available. There are no vaccines here for the general public anyway, no matter what age. Last I heard was 200 shots available for a county population of over 30,000. So sweet of you to tutor Irina in her quilting journey, she made a sweet quilt with your help.

  10. Oh, gosh! Your reaction to the vaccine sounds so awful. You truly are one in a million...in so many ways! I hope you know I mean that in only the best way :) Hope you get to do some uplifting sewing!

  12. Oh, Debbie, so sorry for all the issues with the shot. I have not been able to get an appt. in NYS. Last year, Dec 2019, I had the two part shingles shot. I was sick with the first part and even sicker with the second- could not get out of bed. I can imagaine you are very discouraged. I am glad that sewing could lift your spirits. Here is to improved health for you!

  13. So sorry about your bad reaction. It is good to know the good, the bad, and the ugly from real people. I am glad you were able to help Irina. The straight lines was a great choice. I hope February is better for you.

  14. Oh, Debbie. I suppose with your medical issues, it's no surprise that you might have a bad reaction to the vaccine. On the other hand, you wouldn't want to risk getting the virus either. You'll need to take extra precautions as we emerge from this long isolation. But what a nice encouragement for you to be able to mentor a new quilter. She did a good job with her shadow boxes. And your Easy Breezy is looking good. Now if we can just get through the rest of the winter.

  15. I am sorry for the health issues you have had, and that the vaccine seemed to compound things for you.
Your Easy Breezy top turned out great.
Irina is lucky to have been blessed with your help. The quilt is stunning. I love the Flower Fairies, and that setting is incredible. So good of you work with her and help her succeed.
I hope you will see improvement before the 6 week test date!

  16. Sorry about your reactions to the vaccine. Even though I'm a home health care worker, it will be a long time before I'm eligible for the vaccine. I'm not in any rush to take it, since they rushed the vaccine. I'll wait and see how things go. Hope you get well soon. Glad you helped Irene. Nice quilt she made.

  17. Shadow Box quilts always make such a statement, it's a long time since I made one but I think this one is so effective here and Im sure Irina is thrilled that you shared your quilting knowledge with her.
On the down side of your post, sorry to hear about the health problems and you did not need the rotten reaction to the Covid vaccination!! Hope that you continue to recover even though it may take some time.
    Sending hugs!
