Purple banner done

Finished up the quilting on the banner.  It took me a couple of sessions to quilt, and this morning I completed the binding.  I love how it looks hanging on the yard flag stand with all the green surrounding it.  But alas, it will not be staying outside long.
How I created the triangle units are posted here ,  along with the details about the original tutorial I kind of followed from Magnolia Bay Quilts.

Close up of the quilting:    I did my usual swirls---click here for tutorials on free motion swirls ---and used a medium shade purple thread.  Up close the color is obvious on the white, but 3 feet away not so much.
I generally chose a thread that blends with the overall project, so I don't have to change thread.  Sometimes the stitching will be more obvious because of the color, so if that bothers you change it.  Just remember that 3 feet away it will probably not be that noticeable.
So this is out of my system.  Aren't we glad of that!
Has anyone tried the sponges instead of gloves yet?  I keep seeing comments around blog land about it.  Let me know.  Happy stitching.

  1. Haven't tried the sponges yet. Haven't been to town much lately, but I was in a store yesterday and I forgot to get any. I am anxious to try it. Hopefully I will remember tomorrow. I'm just home today. : )

  2. Your banner turned out beautifully! I admire that you finished, even though you learned what you wanted to learn and finished with a different fabric. It's like those paintings that diminish out softly into the white of the canvas.
I haven't tried the sponges yet. I've been playing around... I always put off the basting the "sammich".

  3. This came out so beautiful - I love to use color thread. I have been straight line quilting, so have yet to try the sponge trick.

  4. The piece came out well and has the feel of the inspiration banners. It's more fun to do our own thing instead of trying to duplicate it. Kim's tutorial was about the best match to an assembly method to achieve it too.

  5. This is a great piece. You do know that purple and green is one of my favorite color pairings...pity this can't stay outside. I don't have anything ready to quilt at the moment, but I will try the sponge tip the next time I do.

  6. Oh Debbie, that banner is beautiful & your swirls are perfect for it. I haven't tried the sponges yet either but will get some them next time I'm at the store. Maybe that's just what I need to make my FM quilting easier. ;) Actually, I think a big problem of mine is that I don't breath while I'm trying to learn FM. Guess I'm not getting enough oxygen to the brain. hehehehe
