From the Quilt Show and fabric......oh my!

A few photos--borrowed/stolen from other members-- to share from our guild quilt show that I viewed on Sunday.

Even though I have only tried one of the one block wonder quilts, this one was fascinating to me.  You have to look close to see the center portion is a printed panel!  The OBW blocks fill the bottom and part of the sides.  Of course, it helped my interest because of the floral garden theme.  I thought it was a beauty.

This was a miniature entry made by Ruth Bartholomew, one of the show chairmen.  It is a tribute to  Ida Strauss, who was on the Titanic when it sunk.  Ruth was recently in the musical locally and played the part of Ida.  and she received great reviews.   The story behind the art creates that magical quality to make it so special.  Great job, Ruth.

And the minute I turned the corner and saw this, I knew Sarge had made it!  It is full of glitter and sparkles, and has a personality all its own.....just like the quilter!

And Sarge is also a very serious quilter......her hexie project, Blooming Through Grief shows it.   She literally stitched her heart into this one.

The featured quilter was Jaylynn, a wonderful friend and prolific quilter.  This has always been one of my favorite quilts that she made.  It features her Oriental fabric collection and it is just glorious in person.

 And the fabric.....oh, my!

The photo should explain that quickly enough.  A guild fund raiser is always a big fat quarter basket.  I bought a few tickets of course.  Janet was in charge this year and as per her usual self, she did an outstanding job.  So when the phone call came and said I won, oh, my!

By her count there are about 40 yards of fabric in fat quarters along with a few books.    I spotted some wonderful blues, and greens,  a few orange ones for pumpkins I think, and a couple of florals.   All in all, just fun and many thanks to the fabric  muse that sent them my way.

I survived the dentist appointment this morning and am sipping warm tea to ease the ache.  A new book is just the thing to help.
Happy stitching.

From quilt show 2017 and QOV

No automatic alt text available.
Made by Shelia

From the Quilt Show  2017 style!
I borrowed/stole a couple of photos of friends to share.

Stained Glass Cathedral Window quilt was 12 years in the making.  This is a close up of part of the big, huge thing!   It has traveled with Shelia, been an ever-present take along project for so many years that she is sad it is finished.  Well, maybe not, because I saw a big grin on her face.
Working the Admissions Desk with Sarge was exhausting.  You have to know her to believe how much energy she consumes!  As a man was leaving the show he asked if any quilts were for sale.  There was one he was interested in.  Yep, this one.......Sarge priced it at "OH, about $20,000."    We had to giggle when he thought it was too much.

Made by Susan
   Now, the story about Sarge.
She has grown as a quilter......
from someone who said she  didn't do scrappy quilts  (afraid to use more than 3 fabrics  in a quilt) to a quilter who can finish  a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt  in style.  Her En Provence is  just beautiful!

I have to share these two.....just because:)  One made by Shelia from a workshop I did, and the other by Fannie.  Love them both!

A highlight of the Saturday  at the Quilt show was the covering of 3 veterans by Quilts of Valor.  Word had spread about the ceremony and men began arriving.

This list of medals and service by this vet was amazing.....he served 3 tours.

The words Marietta read for the presentation of the quilts was so touching.  The line that really struck a chord was,  "A Quilt of Valor is the highest award a civilian can give a veteran in recognition of his service."

The three recipients are here wrapped in their quilts, and flanked by the Honor Guard of SC, who escort  and honor veterans  in events on their motorcycles.

I was only able to do a quick tour of the rest of the show.....a bit too crowded for me to do photos....and my knee gave out.  So Susan took the QOV photos for me....thanks.
  Keep stitching.

Quilt show pics

I spent most of my time at the show talking.....but I did get a few pics of quilt that talked to me!

Recently I have been eyeing basket quilts, so naturally I noticed this one.
This basket quilt was quilted by one of my favorite people, Fannie.  The fabric was inherited from a storage building by one of her quilting groups.  This is the result.

A winner here, by Susan P.  I heard mention that this one had been in the works for several years :)  Who cares, it is done and beautiful.  Soothing colors and stars and log cabins...perfect combinations.

I am a sucker for landscape quilts.  And this one is great.  I love that Pat shared/showed the photo she took that was the basis for this quilt of memories.

Who could not love these giant dogwood blossoms?  Again I liked the color combo used by Janet in this quilt.

One last  entry......
Joan's jacket....just beautiful.  I love the colors used here, too.  So striking.  Figure Flattering Quiltwear is Joan's website  for her other patterns/classes etc.

And it's a wrap for another year.
Happy stitching.

Watercolor display and more

Sir Old Man out did himself setting up the display quilts.......with a good bit of help from Donna, a faithful and tall guild member.   The wall of my projects was striking with the smaller wall hangings pinned onto the black fabric.  It was hard to get an overall photo  but we did the best to give everyone an idea of how it looked.

The World is a Garden started the display, with the jaw dropping Wonder of Color pinned to black fabric.

In front of this we placed a short display stand that Sir Old Man crafted for me. He made sturdy bases, with 2x4 uprights.  Then he drilled a hole for the metal pole.  I love the effect, like a porch railing.   Over it I hung 4 small quilts done in traditional patterns.

The center 2 panels were filled with small wall hangings.   It was interesting to hear comments  about their favorite, as each one seemed to strike a different chord with  the viewer.  The thread painted appliques caught a lot of attention.

We ended the wall with Summer Potpourri---the half log cabin block--- and Higher Hope, the braid on black.  I was continually asked about the stories behind each one, which I love to share :)

I was pretty exhausted and over stimulated....lol.  I really enjoyed meeting new people, even one blog follower drove an hour to
see the show.  It was great to meet her :)  And seeing old friends and getting to visit was such an emotional treat for me.

But an even bigger delight......three students completed their watercolor projects from the spring workshop to enter in the show.  Hold on to your hats......all three won ribbons!!!  I was probably as excited as they were.
This was Pat's.  She added the black inset border to her basic design.  It beautifully framed the teapot and cup applique, to be entered into the Show Theme Challenge.  I absolutely love what she did with this.

Another student, Patty,  reworked her class project and added a lot to it. The narrow purple accent strip just pulls out the favorite color of mine.  The addition of applique enlivens this wall hanging.  Note the embroidered  sentiment she added, too.

And then Miss Joan's wall hanging, which I know I have shown before.  But now she has a ribbon on it.   I do love the flow of dark into the border on this one.

One class and three different versions as a result.  Each student found a different voice in their fabrics.  Congratulations to all of you.

I have a few more photos to share from the show....hopefully tomorrow.  Off to the dentist for now.
Happy stitching.

Favorites from the Quilt Show--part 2

Sometimes the simplest settings speak volumes.  That is the case with this quilt made by Pat Bush.  A wonderful mix of small 9 patch blocks only needs the border set off with beautiful applique to become a favorite.  The machine quilting in the border mimics the applique all the way around.  I loved it.....I think I need to be making 9 patch blocks in my spare time.

This is the second wall hanging Donna Zellmer  has made with block of the month blocks she won last year.  I like the 4 patch on point in place of traditional sashing......wonder if she will make one for me?  Nah, guess not.  I will put it on my someday list!

It is October and what is a fall show without autumn leaves.  Jaylyn made this quilt from blocks made by friends.  She put a little twist on the setting for each block and the leaves really do look like they are falling!  And as always.....her husband does the quilting!   And that border fabric was so perfect for this quilt.

Every year I look to see what this quilter has made.  Edna is an applique  expert---yes, she is---and does wonderful hand quilting.  This year she worked with  friends on English paper piecing and they came up with the idea of hexagon flowers.  Believe me it is just beautiful.

One more red and white......and hearts!  Fannie Wengerd  is a marvelous long arm quilter in our area.  Check out her feathers and tiny hearts in the border.....and all those tiny triangles for the inner border.   So pretty!

Fannie is one of my favorite people.  She just lights up a room with her smile.   Could it be that she loves purple too?
This is her quilt made in memory of her father.  Pappy raised blueberries on his farm.  What could be more natural than to use the barn patterns from Eleanor Burn's Barn Quilts.  She was telling me about the patterns....did you know that barn styles have names?  The Barn Quilt book is full of history on them.....I think I need to check it out.

And that's the show for another year.  Thanks for stopping by, and hope you found some inspiration for a new project.  Now I am off to visit the elves at the Woodworker's Guild and see what is going on in the toy shop!
Happy stitching.

Quilt Show 2014

Long weekend sitting at the Admission Table.....this was a last minute takeover position for me.  The good thing about it was getting to meet a lot of new people, and seeing almost everyone at least once, and seeing old friends too.  I managed a break to zip through the show and take a few photos of my favorites to share.

This was Best of Show....a wonderful applique quilt composed of block of the month blocks.  And it was huge!  she did a great job fitting these blocks of various sizes together to make a cohesive quilt.

A detail photo shows her setting detail.  Using that floral print was a great choice to bring it all together.   I love the rectangular blocks too....especially the bird on the branch. The flying geese are a perfect fill in.

This was a blue and white quilt that was so pretty.  Her mother embroidered the center.  I liked the variety of blocks used in the border, too.

This blue and white Star Flake was made by Ann Sevcik.....and is much prettier than my fuzzy photo!   I am so proud of her quilting on this.....she took my beginner's class last year.  Each piece of the star flake stands out because she did outline quilting and then a close stipple in the white areas.  Great job, Ann.

I love quilts with a story.  Susan said there are happy and sad memories hidden in the baskets.  She began this as a busy project when her Dad got sick, and carried it on car trips and vacations.   We know she would not trade it for anything.

And continuing in the Susan-vein......this is her Disco Snowflakes.  Big, bold, and all batiks.  The galaxy star block does look like it is dancing!

Wow....I loved the impact of this quilt.   I love the barn raising setting used for this.  Then I got closer and almost fell over....it was made by Jill Van Harlingen, an old friend I have lost contact with.

I actually took my first machine quilting class from her many years ago.  I am so glad she has returned to our area and hope to see her soon.
Here is a detail photo of the block she referred to as Mary's Triangle Block.
I think I will be pinning this for future reference.

One more today.  This was made by Sharon Larson for the guild's Not so Round Robin this year.  The applique is beautiful and the off set design is always a favorite with me.

I need to get caught up on a few things and I will finish up sharing photos tomorrow......happy stitching.

Quilt Show inspirations

Sometimes Sir Old Man has a good idea.....yesterday, was one of those times.  He was insistent we go on to the quilt show in Asheville.  He knew I was tired of the gloomy weather and thought I needed a day away.  Or maybe he was afraid I would discover some chore that he needed to do.  Anyway, he was right...this time.
It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day in the mountains.   And the Asheville show is always a good one.  I enjoy all the quilts, but look for those of original design or ones with that special twist that appeals to me.
This quilt caught both of our eyes....colorful and full of scraps.  The center section is filled with slabs and blocks of crumbs and string pieces. A black strip separates the borders made in colorways.  I liked the fun of it.

This was a very large traditional basket quilt done in bright colorful fabrics.  The border set it off so nicely.....large log cabin blocks set on point.   And beautiful feather  quilting  in all the light areas.

This was my favorite in the show.  A Trip Around the World with applique was made as a wedding quilt.

This small wall hanging was so lovely.  I liked the offset border with the leaves flowing into it.  The pieced  background for the flowers was heavily quilted and had a wonderful texture.

I love poppies.....and this one was striking.  I liked the unusual shape for the border too.  The quilting was beautiful.  And thread painted accents finished off the flowers.

This pictorial quilt was outstanding.    The detail from the thread painting was fabulous too......legs, and  arms.
But the background was just fabulous.  She used tiny....I mean tiny...pieces fused to create the background.  See the detail shot below.

And one wonderful floral colorwash quilt!  I found inspiration for a future project.   The block used is a quarter log cabin block....easy and fun to do.   The trellis is formed by the last 2 sides of the block......no sashing strips needed.

After viewing the quilts, we shared a lunch outside and meet some local quilters.  And then I dropped the bombshell....could we stay for the last demo?   The last demo of the day was worth the ride....it was a short talk and viewing of small quilts made by Patsy Thompson.  She was showing some hyper-quilting.  She and her husband are dividing their time between NC and Ohio, it seems.  Her latest quilt took Best of Show for Machine work.

It combines applique, machine embroidery, and of course her hyper-quilting designs.

And yes, I stayed to grab a couple of minutes to talk with her.  I got to thank her for all her inspiration and generous sharing of designs.  Nothing like meeting a mentor that has inspired you!
A little shopping at the room full of vendors and we called it a day.  Thanks, Sir Old Man, for a great day.
