I plan on piecing a few blocks today as I assemble more rows of the Boxed Squares. Like the new work tray? It's a nice size......Ok, it is not a work tray....much too beautiful for that.
It's a new serving tray from Woodworking 101 class that Sir Old Man took recently. Not that he needs a beginning class, but he wanted to learn the technique of choosing different woods and grains to create projects like this.
Three woods were used.....walnut, cherry, and maple. To enrich the color he "fumed" the tray with ammonia at the glue up stage.
On the back, I have him sign with his branding iron that he got for Christmas a couple of years ago.
Overall size is 11'' by 20''. It has a very narrow edge band on the two long sides, and the lovely curved handles create the lip on the short sides.
I love having a tray like this for carrying things to the porch....much safer for me to hold onto.
I think I should ask for a smaller version to use by my sewing machine to corral some much used tools. Can't let him think one tray will be enough:)

It always intrigues me to see the beautiful things made out of wood and always think that woodworkers must feel the same about wood as we do about fabric.

Oh, gorgeous, Debbie! He could make them and sell them to quilters for the purpose you mentioned. I love anything hand crafted from wood. I've tried to get my hubby to take up woodworking (he is very handy--built our house), but to no avail. You are a lucky gal!
Sir Old Man could be teaching classes! He is a true artisan with wood.

I'm trying to track down a story I read, could you please let me know if it was on your blog. It was about someone who lost 3 quilts in a mudslide....found them under 6 feet of mud....2 that were less heavily quilted were irretrievable, but 1 more densely quilted washed and dried and was good again. If this is from you, I would love to read the story again...I have started quilting more densely becasue of it.
I love seeing everything SOM creates, but my all time favorite would be that gorgeous bed he made for your bedroom. That was definitely a thing of beauty and something to be cherished for many years to come, and hopefully handed down for future generations to love. One of our grandsons made a breadboard using that technique for his parents many years ago, but now creates accent pieces of furniture with a very modern flair.

Fine woodworking is not easy to do. Your husband's work is gorgeous!
Such a beautiful wooden tray, the different colours of the woods used is magic! Definitely you should have one by your machine!
